Aimée van Drimmelen's Black Gold employs hand-drawn animation layered over stop-motion sequences of moving ink on drumskins to create a striking, mournful portrait of the Alberta tar sands. Created in a cabin in Saskatchewan, this is Aimée's first animated film. This animated short was made for Hothouse 7, the NFB's program for emerging filmmakers, whose central theme was "Here Be Dragons".

Inspired by found sound of a theme park in the distance, lyrically rendered in pencil and paper, and produced as part of the 10th edition of the NFB's Hothouse apprenticeship.
