Turning Tides

Des touristes curieux qui font la queue devant un casse-croûte pour déguster les fameuses coques frites ou fried clams. Des familles entières qui pêchent le coquillage blanc sur la batture, pantalons relevés et nez au vent. Ces tableaux de la vie quotidienne des Acadiens des Maritimes se raréfient en même temps que la ressource. Les pêcheurs de coques du parc national Kouchibouguac, au Nouveau-Brunswick, en savent quelque chose. Ils n'échappent pas à la triste réalité des pêcheries du monde entier et la viabilité de leur métier est en péril. La dernière batture raconte le déclin de ce mollusque qui engendre l'effritement d'une coutume et d'un mode de vie. Pour les pêcheurs commerciaux, c'est la disparition d'une source de subsistance; pour les autres, c'est une rupture avec la tradition. Sommes-nous venus à bout de cette ressource qui semblait aussi inépuisable que l'air que l'on respire et l'eau que l'on boit? Ce court métrage documentaire a été produit dans le cadre du concours Tremplin qui permet à des jeunes francophones, de nationalité canadienne et résidant à l'extérieur du Québec, de réaliser un premier film dans des conditions professionnelles.

In a Cape Breton village, Buddhist monks and nuns pray in their abbey, while French-speaking fishermen put out to sea to haul in their lobster traps. Seemingly divided by language, culture and religion, these people share more than meets the eye. The film delicately weaves a connection between the beliefs of the two groups, both regarding life as a cycle. Once a year, the Buddhist monks and nuns buy the fishermen's last lobster catch and release it back into the sea, believing that these lobsters could be reincarnated in the cycle leading to enlightenment. The fishermen too regard existence as a natural cycle. They preserve life by delicately putting back in the water female lobsters carrying eggs, which will hatch into the lobsters the men's descendants will fish. The film considers mutual respect and tolerance. This documentary short was produced as part of the Tremplin program, which enables young Francophone filmmakers to make a first production in a professional context.

It was the summer of 2000 and the country watched with disbelief as federal fishery officers appeared to wage war on the Mi'kmaq fishermen of Esgenoopetitj, or Burnt Church, New Brunswick. Why would officials of the Canadian government attack citizens for exercising rights that had been affirmed by the highest court in the land? What happened at Burnt Church? Alanis Obomsawin casts her cinematic and intellectual nets into history to provide a context for the events on Miramichi Bay. Delineating the complex roots of the conflict with passion and clarity, she builds a persuasive defence of the Mi'kmaq position.
