Thirteen-year-old Gesho is one of the 14,000 Ethiopian Jews who left Northeast Africa for a new life in Israel during a massive refugee effort initiated by the Israeli government in 1991. In Ethiopia, he and his family lived without running water or electricity, and Gesho had to drop out of school in grade 6 to help his father. Now his family lives in a trailer equipped with basic conveniences in a temporary community for new immigrants on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Gesho's older brother Benjamin arrived seven years earlier and tells of the hardships he endured. Now, integrated into Israeli culture, he helps Gesho adapt and encourages his hopes of becoming a professional soccer player. (Also available in a Hebrew version.)

Ten-year-old Yehuda is a radiant example of the Hassidic belief in the joy and celebration of prayer. With a head for stories and a heart for sharing them, he and his younger brother pore over old photographs of Jewish people in Poland. Ibrahim is an eleven-year-old Palestinian Arab boy living in East Jerusalem. Every day on his way home from the Anglican School in West Jerusalem, an international school with students from over 40 countries, Ibrahim passes through an Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood, a secular Jewish neighbourhood, and an Arab neighbourhood where Palestinians wear traditional dress. His life blends modern-day activities such as soccer and Nintendo with respect for the traditional ways of his grand-father in Galilee, and his nanny in the Old City of Jerusalem.
