Spheres

Un essai d'abstraction géométrique en trois mouvements, dans lequel des sphères aux reflets métalliques évoluent dans l'espace. L'animation fut réalisée en 1946 par René Jodoin et Norman McLaren, mais ce n'est qu'en 1968 que McLaren décida d'utiliser comme trame sonore des extraits du « Clavier bien tempéré » de Bach, interprétés par Glenn Gould.

In this short animation film the triangle achieves the distinction of principal dancer in a geometric ballet. The triangle is shown splitting into some three hundred transformations, dividing and sub-dividing with grace and symmetry to the music of a waltz. The film's artist and animator is René Jodoin, whose credits include Dance Squared and several collaborations with Norman McLaren. Film without words.

An experiment in the exact synchronization of sound and image. Sound cards were photographed directly onto both the film and the soundtrack, allowing Norman McLaren to produce a perfect synchronization of image and sound.
