How People Got Fire centres on Grandma Kay (based on elder Kitty Smith) and the connection she forges with the village children through the oral tradition of their culture. Twelve-year-old Tish is one of those children - an introspective, talented girl who feels particularly drawn to Grandma Kay's kitchen. Here, past and present blend, myth and reality meet, and the metaphor of fire infuses all in a location that lies at the heart of the community's spiritual and cultural memory.

Oma's Quilt

Oma's Quilt is about love, life and change. Oma's home for half a lifetime is brimming with memories that warm her heart yet bring tears to her eyes. On this day, her house stands empty, all the fragments of her life packed neatly into boxes. Oma is moving from Maple Street, where she lived for most of her life, to a senior's residence where she doesn't know anyone. Watching these events unfold is granddaughter Emily, a young girl full of wide-eyed enthusiasm. She senses that her grandmother isn't sure she will like her new home. Wishing to help, Emily does something to ease the burden of such a momentous change in all their lives. Oma's Quilt is part of the NFB's Talespinners 2. Like the eight films in the first Talespinners collection, this second set of films is for children age 5 to 9. Vibrant animation brings tales from a wide range of cultural communities to the screen. Talespinners 2 includes four original stories and three inspired by books.

Summer Legend

Silas Rand and Charles Leland first wrote down the legends of the great spirit Glooscap before the turn of the century. Since then, Summer Legend has been retold many times, but never more beautifully than in this colourful animated interpretation. It tells of the Mi'kmaq people in the cold white dawning of their world, and of how Glooscap battled with the giant Winter in order to bring Summer to the North.
